Bridges Q & A

What is a bridge?

A bridge is a treatment option to replace missing teeth. It closes or “bridges” the gaps in your smile as an alternative option to dentures or implants. Bridges use two or more crowns that anchor your teeth on the sides, with artificial teeth filling the middle.

Dental bridges are commonly made of porcelain or zirconia, both durable materials to give you a natural looking smile. The bridge serves as a device to prevent your natural teeth from shifting or misaligning when the crowns are installed.

What is the procedure for getting bridges?

During your initial appointment, Dr. Kamanin prepares your teeth to install the dental bridge. He contours your teeth, ensuring they are small enough to fit dental crowns. He provides local anesthesia to prevent pain during the reshaping process.

Dr. Kamanin takes impressions of your teeth to custom-make the dental bridge. While waiting for the bridge to be built, he may fit your mouth with a temporary version. When the permanent bridge is ready, he’ll fit it into your mouth and cement it in place to prevent movement.

Should I get a dental bridge?

It depends on your needs. Bridges are alternatives to dental implants, a more permanent and durable solution compared to bridges. But if your teeth will need fillings or crowns in the future, a dental bridge may be a better treatment option than implants.

Meeting with Dr. Kamanin can help you determine which option is best based on:

  • Your oral hygiene
  • The condition of your teeth
  • Your oral health needs

How long does the bridge last?

Dental bridges last between five and 15 years, depending on your oral hygiene. Cavities that form under crowned teeth can damage the bridge. To prevent cavities, brush your teeth twice a day and floss at least once daily. For additional assistance, schedule a regular checkup with Dr. Kamanin to assess the state of your crowns, teeth, and dental bridge.
